Philadelphia Inquirer | 12/11/2005 | Stephen A. Smith | Hold the applause: Sixers still mediocre

| 12/11/2005 | Stephen A. Smith | Hold the applause: Sixers still mediocre Leave it Stephen A. to slap you in the face after the Sixers win 107-95 against the Nets. A game in which the Sixers did not swoon in the final stanza and won two straight in back to back games.
Inspite of his dramatics, Smith has a point. The 76ers still hover around .500 and have yet to show the consistency to convince us they will climb any higher. However, I think it's too early to make the call on this team. The schedule gods have been cruel this year (as Stephen admits). The Sixers have played numerous game in a week time. Many back to back with travel. To be honest ... back to back games with travel litters everyone schedule this year. But it certianly doesn't help a team gel or consistently.
As a veteran fan, I know you can't put your finger on this team in December. Come talk to me after they make that annual west coast death march to the end of the year. Many Sixers teams have gelled and others floundered after the brutal road trip. I can't say what will happen. But I can say we will know more about the Sixers and their quest to rise above mediocrity.
