Caution: Speed Bump Ahead

Today the MLK Day game is back in Philly. This is a great game to take the kids to. The Sixers do a good job of paying homage to Dr. King and the matinee start time (2PM) means the kids can stay awake to see the game.

But over the years I found this 2 o’clock start to a bit of a speed bump for teams. The shooting at the start will be off. Often for both teams. Some teams shake off the slow start (A last second jumper from Dirk Nowitzki comes to mind). Other teams never adjust and get pasted.

It adds another wrinkle to the schedule in this wacky season. There was no practice for the Sixers yesterday after a 2nd command performance over the Wizards Saturday nite. So you really have no idea what’s gonna happen here. I understand Andrew Bogut is expected to play. So the Sixers will have their hands full.

You will see more obstacles ahead this week when you peek at the schedule. The Nuggets are in town Wednesday and the Hawks on Friday. Both winning teams. The Sixers match up well to them, but it’s not a given the Sixers will win. And then they Sixers travel to Miami on Saturday to end the week with back to back games.

So is this the week the Sixers don’t finish with a winning record? I don’t think so. But I can’t tell you for sure how that’s gonna happen. That’s all the more reason to watch. Heck, come on out to a game. This team deserves better attendance.

Sixers–Wizards, Blow-out, Rinse, Repeat

I’m happy to see my Sixers get back in the win column again. I don’t care how bad the Wizards are. At some point you have to give the Sixers credit for not just beating a bad team but dominating a bad team. And the Sixers dominated a bad Wizards team.

"If everybody's going to be selfish, it doesn't matter what the lineup is," guard John Wall said. "When you're a losing team, guys don't want to hang around with each other. Win a few games and we'll be OK."

I can’t image how hard it is to be a Wizards fan. Everybody knows what’s going on and they are hapless to change it. Wall’s attitude that winning mends all fences is sound, but I don’t see how that’s gonna happen. As Malik Rose said last nite, They have a bunch of young players and players on the last year or 2 of their contracts. All they are worried about was getting their points.

The Sixers and Wizards are polar opposites.

Like other fans out there, I want to see how the Sixers match up with some of the better teams. At this point in their maturation they need to learn how to adjust when teams exploit their weaknesses. We know they have a hard time with long teams. The Sixers are overmatch on the boards and get beat up in the post. They can’t get better at it without more experience.

But, as I said earlier, the Sixers should get extra credit for blowing out a bad team in a home and home tilt. So tonite …

Yes, it has come to this already. All I can remember doing is work, diner, Sixers basketball, sleep, rinse and repeat.

Too much fun at the Sixers season opener last Friday.

Had to stay home an watch the Toronto Raptors beat down on TV. So Ed Stefanski, this is your new team. Oh boy, do you have some work to do. The departure of Chris Bosh has left this team in rebuild mode. What? Don’t want to rebuild? Let fast Eddie build you a team with nice luxury tax cap and no superstars. Not sure what Toronto the decision criteria was to hire Ed. He’s a nice guy, maybe that’s was enough.

Read every Sixers article available on the internet. Ok, all the ones I cared to read. I am miffed the national guys aren’t showing the Sixers more love. Then I watched playoff football until the outcome was inevitable. Went to bed early (earlier than usual any way). Sleep

Work, dinner, drive to WCU …
I started to worry about the Pacers. The national press has been taking them up. But my fear was for naught. The basketball gods had ruled that Danny Granger Shalt not play, and stricken him with food poisoning. The Pacers gave a good effort. But Thad Young was monster in this one. After the Sixers had taken control of the game, the guy next to me starts going on an on about how lucky the Sixers have been to not have to face the teams leading scorer in most of their wins . That’s just nonsense. This is what you’re gonna get this season. Guys are gonna be out. You still have to win the game. The Sixers will be on the short end of it this season. Just like everyone else. Watch what happens. They may win or they may lose, but they probably won’t get blown-out.

Work, dinner, time for Sixers vs. Kings. What does it say about your expectations when you fire the coach two weeks into the season. They are not leaving Sacramento. Maybe nobody else really wanted them. JBOD playing out the string. The Sixers wax the floor with them. At some point in the fourth I’m getting kinda board with these blow-outs. I never thought I would say that.

Can’t wait to see my boys match up to the Knicks. Boy that would be sweet to get an early win at the Garden. What? Hawes is a no go. Down a big man against a very long team. This does not look good. The Sixers get pushed around early, but the Knicks just don’t have the killer instinct. The Sixers hang around for the entire game. Knicks fans were sweating it once again. But the Sixers just didn’t have the juice. They fall 79-85 … Hey, what was that with Mike D’Antioni not shaking hands with Coach Collins. He looked like he had to catch a train.

Exhausted after Sixers Home Opener

Yes, exhausted. I can’t remember such an exciting game. The center was electric.

The only down side of the whole evening was getting stuck in traffic. Phantoms/Bears Hockey @citizens bank park I was told. But not told soon enough to avoid the traffic. I missed the opening. It sounded like it ran kinda long. Somebody tell me what happened?

That’s all I got. I don’t know if I can handle these back to back games. I have a friend covering the Raptors game tonight. Go Sixers.

Now that the Sixers have shown you that they can win on the road.
Now that you have seen the Sixers beat a team they where supposed to beat on the road.
Now that the Sixers have shown how they respond to a tuff loss.

Now that the Sixers have shown you how they respond to back-to back games.
Now that you have seen the Sixers can take care of the ball.
Now that you see the Sixers are really serious about their team defense.

I had a great time on new years eve. I love watching a Sixers game before the ball drops. And watching the Sixers drop the hammer of the Warriors just made my nite (107-79). My friend Ricky was lamenting the let down in the Utah game. Claiming they looked more like the old Sixers of the Eddie Jordon era than the Sixers team at then end of last season. Hey Ricky, they can’t win then all. The Sixers don’t get blown out often so that is what a loss is going to look like. And that’s what I think the season is going to look like. You can’t say the Sixers were lucky ‘cause Warriors stand-out start, Monta Ellis was out. That’s going to happen over and over this season. Stars will miss games and the rest of the team will have to suck it up. Utah did just that Friday nite. You gotta have some faith this season.

Early in the game, Sixers sideline reporter Meredith Marakovits showed a quote by new Warriors head coach Mark Jackson about placing a premium on defense over offense. And pointed to the seasons fast start as evidence of the new Warriors. The way the game started (Sixers 7 Warriors 20) you might have believed that quote about defense.

The Sixers starters could not make a shot and Stephan Curry was making them look really bad on the pick and roll. The Super Subs (Williams, Young, and Turner) came in and changed the tone of the game. The Sixers closed the gap by the end of the 1st period and forged a 7 point lead at the half. It might have been a bigger lead if the Sixers could make free throws. Contrary to Malik Rose’s opinion, I am not so sure that bad free throw shooting can’t be contagious.

But after the jump the Sixers made all of the Warriors talk about defense disappear. They started the 3rd period with a 13-1 run and the rout was on. Other than shooting better from the 3 point line than the foul line there was little to argue with about the Sixers performance. They corrected their defense against Curry and the 3 point shooting was outrageous.

You could see the frustration on Coach Jackson face. He’s going to find things are a lot harder than it looks from the broadcast booth.

Keep the faith Sixers fans.

76ers Stumble in Utah 99-102

Well I guess our wishes for the Sixers go above .500 was not to be. I watched this one Tivo delayed. I probable started mid way thru the 3rd period. I resists skipping ahead. It looked like the Sixers had the game in hand.

I had a feeling this was going to be a loss when Iggy hits a 3 pointer, get’s fouled but failed to make the free throw. Then he comes down and misses 2 free throws on an ensuing possession … ugh! No comeback tonite. No matter how much the Jazz wanted to give it away.

The good thing about the NBA and this expedited season is that you don’t have a lot of time to sit and ponder a loss. There’s another game tonite. The Sixers will be in Oakland to face the former broadcaster now coach Mark Jackson and his Golden State Warriors

Hmmm .. it looks like the Warriors new front office has there hands full with “Golden State Warriors Face Multiple Sexual Harassment Charges, According To Report”.

Sixers Rock in the Valley of the Suns

Thank goodness the first win of the season was nothing like last year's. This 76ers pop their cherry in only their second game with a romping 103-83 win over the Phoenix Suns. They even their record at 1-1. That's the kind of game I was looking for. Not only did they beat a team the should be able to beat, but the did so in convincing fashion.

The game started out just as one would hope. (1) Iggy came out like a man on fire. He was all over the floor ... dropping 3's, grabbing rebounds and playing in your face defense. He finished the game with 4 of the Sixers 11 steals. (2) the Sixers took better care of the ball (only 3 turns at halftime) and (3) they played great team defense. Granted the Suns are Steve Nash & JBOD (just a bunch of dudes), but the Sixers did what they had to. Which was hound Nash, not collapse too much when he penetrated, rebound the ball and get out on the break.

They were up by 7 in the 1st period and 14 and the mid point. Then the 2nd half is was like WOW!

As the game tracker shows it took the Suns almost 6 minutes to score a basket. The Sixers scored 19 point during the stretch. At the point the game was essentially over. The route was on.

Garbage time!

Time to rest some starters and give the second team some playing time. The rookie Vucevic got some extended playing time. He looks like a keeper (6 pts, 6 rebs, 2 dimes). You can tell the boy’s got skills. It would be nice to see him become more aggressive. But you have to like what you see.

But the primary reason to sit starters when the game is out of reach is you don’t want to see anyone get hurt. My heart skipped a beat when Jrue went down on an awkward play where he was stuffed by two Sun defenders. I was just thinking to myself “What he doing in the game?” Coach Collins admitted to the this foolishness in the post game press conference. But Jrue was ok. No harm no foul I guess.

Spencer Hawes has been playing well this season. But I could have died laughing when he batted a pass away from his opponent and proceeded to rumble down towards the basket to score. I’m thinking to my self “Pass it” “Pass it” . I did not want to see him get embarrassed. But he scored the basket. That just the kind of nite it was.

Sixers drop 1st game in Portland

Common sense tells me that the Sixers can’t win them all. Logic tells me that they would probably not win Monday nite against the Blazers. But I’d be lying if you told I didn’t expect them to pull out the game. Because the team I have come to love does not give up. Rarely do they fold like a cheap tent. Instead they just keep plugging away and something good happens.

Well I guess something good did happen, but it was just short of a win. The barrage of 3 pointers in the fourth when down by 15 was really good. But They just dug too much of a whole fueled by 20 turnovers. Jrue Holiday committed 6 turnovers! Much to many for your floor leader. He just did not seem himself. I kept waiting for him to take charge in the 2nd half. But it never came. Not what I was expecting from him either.

But I’m going to keep a positive attitude. They made the game completive. Let see about a win in Phoenix.

Sixers finish Preseason with a sloppy win

It was a stark contrast to the previous tilt with the Wizards, but the Sixers did find a way to win (101-94). You had to know the Wizards would give more effort this time around after getting spanked last Friday.

Doug Collins said it best, the Sixers played poor defense, gave up too many offensive rebounds and had too many turnovers. You’re not going to win may games that way and everyone knows it. But is was a good thing in this regard, the humbling experience will help them focus. You’re not playing a team as dreadful as the Wizards every nite.

The other good you can take from the game was the play of Jrue Holiday. In a nutshell the win was all Jrue. He scored 15 points in the 4th period and limited the number of turn-overs. I think you are looking at the future. Holiday should be the Sixers 20 & 10 guy this year (Points & Assists). He is on the verge of superstardom.

Ok, preseason’s over. Let’s get ready to lace ‘em up for real.

Malik Rose joins Sixers broadcast team on Comcast SportsNet

I missed the announcement the other day about Malik Rose doing color for Sixers broadcasts this year. As a Drexel Alum Malik has a special place in my heart. I remember watching him in College. Everyone knew that he was special. If you to went to game at the DAC (Drexel Athletic Center) back then you’d see rows of students with skull caps on emulating Malik’s bald head. No one was surprised to see him go on to be a 13 year NBA veteran.

Malik did a good job. He started off a bit nervous. But struck a good balance between critical analysis and cheerleading. You may have noticed the awe the Wizards announcer had when he made note of Malik’s NBA championship ring ( He has 2 with the Spurs). So I guess that’s why Malik let ‘em slide when he referred to a cheesesteak as a “Steak n Cheese” and thought a “Steak with or without” meant what kind of cheese you wanted.

With apologies to LL Cool J ... I'm back from an extended hiatus. It's been over a year since I posted. No there was nothing wrong. Thanks for asking. Sometimes life happens while you are making other plans. So I sat the blog aside for a while. But now I'm back.

That's not to say I have not been paying attention. My boys made some noise last year and I was loving every minutes of it. Doug Collins came in a righted the ship after the year of living dangerously under Eddie Jordon. Collins gave me a good vibe. It was enough to entice me to view last years model. After all, how could it be any worse? Collins came in and instilled some discipline, defense, and accountability. And guess what? After a horrendous start they managed to make the playoffs. Yeah ... I was the that Sixers playoff win versus the eat. I wasn't blogging but I was soaking it all in.

So like the NBA I'm back. I am relieved for not to having to comment on the stupidity that was the NBA lockout. In the end little was accomplished. But to remind the common man that rich men, celebrities, and stars don't really care about us. Given the opportunity to fix the sport (we all know it's broken), the league and the players reverted back thier cocoons until they noticed none but a few faithful cared. Then the magic that is Christmas inspired them all to throw in the towel and agree to continue what we been doing before. Owners & GMs handing out foolish contracts and players being greedy, both putting themselves above team and sport.

But I realize now that there was no one else like me out there. There is so much content out in the blogsphere. And much of it is good. Now that the Depressed Fan has gone All Sixers All the Time you can't find a better Sixers blog. You can't compete with that. And you gotta love the Liberty Ballers. But it seems like everybody is a reporter or analyst. I'm just a fan. I'm a season ticket holder (for longer than this blog has existed). I were my heart on sleeve. This blog is about that perspective. Sure I have an opinion on just about everything. I'm Joe fan. But I'm not an expert (and I don;t play one on TV). It's about how I feel, how I think, what keeps me going. It doesn't matter if you read this. It's not about you.

Kate Fagan leaked last nite that the Comcast brain trust will be hiring former Nets president Rod Thorn. Stripping Ed Stefanski of his President title as President and general manager. The party line is that Thorn and Stefanski worked well together in New Jersey. Indeed they managed to get the Nets to back to back NBA finals.

What’s goes unsaid is that Stefanski was over matched for the job, but the Comcast crew liked him enuff not to just fire him. Conventional wisdom would say that Stefanski should have been shown the door along with his hand picked head coach after last season’s collapse. The hiring of Thorn is a sign that the organization isn’t tone deaf. He (Thorn) is a basketball lifer. He knows the business side of the sport. It can only help the organization to have more basketball people in the ranks.

But I have to wonder, are we becoming the New Jersey, Nets? Eddie Jordon, Stefanski, and now Thorn, all former Nets. Billy King reviled in Philly circles, is now the President and General manager in New Jersey. One could easily foresee the two organizations swapping personnel.

Doug Collins pegged to be the new Sixers Skipper

So the worse kept secret in Sixersville this week was the choice of the new skipper. GM, Ed Stefanski danced around the question that Doug Collins was the choice in an interview yesterday on WIP. But then went on to say how comfortable he and the rest of the search team was with Collins. What a great basketball mind Collins had and how the interview lasted more than 6 hours (compared to 3 for the others).

Collins was not the worst choice. Wether he is the best choice? Time will tell. The link to the team helps. It's hard for an outsider with no investment in the Philly sports scene to be taken seriously. So he can say that Sixers pride runs in his veins. That he wants to see his former team return to its place of glory as an NBA elite team. He's not just here to make a paycheck ... Yadda, Yadda, Yadda.

Hello I just became relevant again

So it was more that a dream a few days ago when I was hoping for the Sixers to strike gold in the 2010 NBA lottery. No, the Sixers did not get the #1 pick but the #2 overall is a pretty good deal.

I got this e-mail from Ed Stefanski today ...

To paraphrase, it said "Hi Mr. Season Ticket holder ... My life (er) Your life as a Sixers fan just became relevant again. Thanks for sticking with us in spite of how we stunk up the joint last season. But as a small consolation we now have the #2 pick in the 2010 draft. Where I will draft Evan Turner unless I suffer a brain hemorrhage ... pick someone else ... and skewer my career just weeks after being brought from the brink of extinction."

All kidding aside this is great news. I fielded calls today from friends asking what I think about Tuesday's development. RU kiddin' me? I'm ecstatic! This changes everything.

People were talking Sixers hoops on the radio today ... in the midst of the Flyers improbable playoff run!

I just hope they don't over think this thing, try to get cute, or get greedy. The #2 pick is ideal. You don't have to play the "John Wall" or "Evan Turner" guessing game. Whomever the Wizards pick the Sixers will take the other. This is a no brainer guys. Your mind can start to play tricks on ya with the #1 pick. Hmm .. speaking of the Wizards, their last #1 pick was Kwamie Brown.

Did you see that look on the NJ Nets guy when he got the 3rd pick. He was stunned! It was like ... Holy Crap! I can't believe that just happened.

At the same time I was jumping for joy in my living room like ... Holy Crap! I can't believe that just happened.

Sixers Strike Lottery Gold

I was playing with the ESPN lottery machine today. Trying to get a feel for what the odds are that the Sixers strike lottery gold tomorrow. I know … at number 6 they only have a 5.3% chance. But there’s nothin’ like clicking repeatedly on the ol’ lottery machine to see just how long it takes to see my desired result. I was annoyed with how often someone else jump over us and pushed the Sixers back to the 7th pick. But after less than 20 tries … BAM

I think most would agree that the Sixers need lighting to strike in order to turn the franchise around.

I'd swear it is something about games on Friday nites. The Sixers games most worth watching are on Friday nites. I’m sure the buzz of a Friday crowd has something to do with it. Perhaps the fact that the better teams tend to be scheduled on Friday (That's just good marketing). But whatever it is the Sixers should bottle it and sprinkle it on their food before every game.

Andre Igoudala was playing with a chip on his shoulder. Not to be out done by the LeBron James, the obvious object of the crowds interest (who could blame 'em). The 1st quarter was a high flyin' slam fest. Iggy and LeBron were throwing down some sick dunks. Iguodala keep the Sixers in the game with 16 1st period points. I kept waiting for the inevitable drop-off in the Sixers play. But E.B. was performing at a high level also. You couldn't be happy with the defense with the Cavs scoring 61 by half time. But they were only down 6.

I'm thinking "Here we go", after the Cavs got the early jump in the 3rd. But the Sixers righted the ship. Iguodala came alive again. He was determine to put his stamp on the game. James seemed to be rusty to me. He deferred a lot to his teammates. Who did not respond. Allowing the Sixers to close the gap and lead the game by 1 to end the 3 period.

If Iggy played that kind of game every nite (which is to say "selfish") his contract would not be such a question mark. Perhaps the Sixers could have won had he been "more" selfish at the end of the game. Instead they struggled to score in the 4th and watched their hopes fall short with a errant pass from the rookie, Jrue Holiday. Holiday never should have been in that position.

Still it was a great game to watch. lotsa of fireworks, competitive and the Sixers lost.

I can’t believe I went to that game last nite. It was worst than the nite before. It’s hard to believe so many player have checked out already. Jason Smith and Rodney Carney seem to be the only guys who realize they all have to play for a spot next year. You don;t care about E.J., but you never know who’s going to follow.

Sixers drop another to the Pacers

Well all those tanker fans should be happy with this one. The Sixers showed no effort to win this game. They drop a road game to the Pacers 107-96, who played without their 23 points per game All Star Danny Granger. Granger was out serving a 1 game suspension for a fight on their recent west coast road trip.

If you suffered thru the game as I did, you may never see a more pathetic display of defense. Williams was just a spectator on the floor. Iggy disappeared from the game. It was like a layup line for the Pacers. It is disingenuous for the Sixers media to play this game up as one in which the Pacers stepped up. How hard is it to make a frickin’ layup!

Dontay Jones torches them for 25 (11 PPG average) …. Brandon Rush hits for 24 (8 PPG average) …. you’ve gotta be kidding me!

It was nice to see the Sixers win one this afternoon. Nice to see a Thad Young sighting also. The encouraging thing about his 32 point career performance was that his points were split evenly between the 1st and 2nd halves. It's not unusual for Thad to go off for a quarter or a even a half. But he rarely gets it going on for a full game. When Thaddeus is scoring the Sixers shooting percentage is usually pretty high. And it seems that their shooting percentage has to be high if they are going to beat anyone. Today was no different. I thought the Sixers defense was good today, in fact it fueled their fast-break and that high shooting percentage. But they still gave up a 101 points. Just think about how dominate they could be if they played defense like the did the past few years.

Yes, I admit it. I'm a glutton for punishment. Heading down to the Wach Center for a game again. Monday's blow-out was painfully to watch. The line tonite is the Celtics -9. The over/under is abouot 197. Love these line trends;

Celtics are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Friday games.
Celtics are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
Celtics are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games as a favorite.

Of course there are equal number of trends that point the other way. A win would be nice. That beat the C's last time they played on a Friday nite.

I’m taking in a game tonite. I didn’t get a chance to see the Lakers game Friday. From the box score is looks like the Sixers played well, but not well enuff to win … or perhaps just not well enuff for Kobe to feel he had to win the game.

Alas, a win over the Magic seems like a tough call tonite. Particularly because of how they spanked the Sixers earlier in the season and they are 10 games above .500 for the season. So I’m wonder why the spread is only Sixers +4. The Over/Under id 198.

Maybe I’ll just root for the 76ers to cover.

The bumpy road continues

The Sixers continued their string of up and down performances last nite in Phoenix. The Sixers fall behnf by 22 in the 3rd period and that was all she wrote. Sixers 95 Suns 106.

Eddie Jordan’s take on the game was “I didn’t have any problem with our effort, I just thought there was a stretch where we didn’t execute as well and we didn’t make shots.”

What?

A loss in Phoenix should have been expected. So if the trend holds the Sixers will play well tomorrow nite in LA. Perhaps even win as they did last year at the Staples Center. After all Kobe is still coming back from an injury and the Sixers play some of their best ball on Friday nites.

But I'm not holding my breath or anything like that. :)

Have we seen the last of Allen Iverson?

So here’s a scary thought. I received a text message this yesterday afternoon. It was an Update from the Sixers informing us that Allen Iverson will not be with the team tonite and will be out indefinitely. The first thought that came to mind is “Have we seen the last of Allen Iverson”?

So here’s the scary thought. As I started to write this post I discovered that the loud guy with the pretentious A (Stephen A. Smith) was thinking the same thing. Say Goodbye to Allen Iverson. That’s a scary thought.

Allen is leaving the team to look after his daughter. It’s a noble leave of absence.The unknown illness has been a concern for some time. Everyone knows that Allen is a family first guy. But it was Stephen A. that raised the question during the All-Star break … if he were that mature superstar his fans like to position him as “Wouldn’t he be at the All Star Game”? I’m sure he might add that Allen should be with the team now and let the best doctors money can buy look after his child.

Stephen A. Smith can be an ass.

But at best the AI experiment has been a brush with nostalgia. To see Allen back in a Sixers uniform has put a few more fannies in the seats at the Wach. It was obvious that the only reason many of the people around me where there was to see Allen and a glimpse of 2001. There’s nothing wrong what that. You can say his return was just a parlor trick by the GM. There’s probable nothing terribly wrong with that either.

Allen’s return did not hurt this team. He has been a model citizen. He has played within himself. He has tried to inject his teammates with his spirit … his will to win … to teach them they should leave everything they’ve got on the floor. But it has not helped. It’s not his fault, but none the less the Sixers can’t win with or without him.

So what’s the point.

The concern about his daughter is real. The Sixers chances for this season are not. And to expect the team to use a roster spot for ‘em next year … at their weakest position … is not realistic either. So this will likely be good-bye. With any luck his daughter’s condition will improve and we will see a final swan song. I hope so. I hope I will be there to see it.

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

The Jekyll and Hyde season continued last nite as my Sixers got waxed by the Bulls at the United Center just 24 hours removed from a remarkable victory over the Spurs. I could not finish watching the game. It was too horrible.

I’m screaming at my television during the 2nd period collapse “Stop settling for jumpers” … “Where’s the defense”. Clearly no one was listening. Least of all Eddie Jordon. He let Chicago take Elton Brand completely out of the game. Does it really take an offensive genius to take advantage of a team overplaying your low post player? How about finding a way to get ‘em the ball. The high screen in roll that worked so well last time. I dunno … do something!

Kate Fagan lambasted Jordon again today in the paper. While she shoots some blame at the players, Jordon is squarely in her cross hairs. She’s now speculating whether Jordon will be fired before the season is done. I loved Brian’s headline on the Depressed fan “Kate Fagan goes for the Jugular”.

Like the guys at the Fan, I don’t believe it will happen before the season is done. What’s the point. Unless his damage to the players psyche becomes un repairable. No, this death march will continue. We will probably see more of the days like the last two … Dr. Jekyll one day … Mr. Hyde the next.

Sixers Spank Spurs in the Money Quarter

I think like like most fans, I was not in a good place before the Sixers vs. Spurs game last. The spanking they took from the Heat in the previous game along with the lackluster trade gave me little confidence against a contender like San Antonio.

But that's the beauty of sports. You never now what could happens in any 1 game. That's why they play the games as the cliché goes. I was encouraged after the first quarter. The Sixers trailed by one 25-26. They were not really stopping them, but they were getting theirs.

The second quarter was more of the same. But they fell further behind. They trailed 52-45 at the half. So you had to wonder how they would respond in the 2nd half.

Die like dogs or MAN up?

Well they decided to MAN up. They stepped up the intensity and then Sammy got tossed after his second technical foul. Sammy's poor decision making is well chronicled, but this was NOT his fault. The Sixers were getting jobbed by the refs. It all changed after that. The Sixers won the quarter by 4.

In the fourth, they just continued to pour it on. It was like the Sixers defense the last few years. The were scratching and clawing. Tips balls ... steals ... run outs ... fastbreak basketball. The Sixers had 38 fast break points! That like 35% of their points. It was contagious ... even Speights was playing crazy straight up D on Tim Duncan. And Lou Williams erased any doubt you had about him (at least for a day). After all it was his Mom's nite "Sixers See Red" to promote heart disease awareness. So it was a fitting performance (20 pts on 7-11 shooting, 1 steal and 2 BLOCKS). The rookie Jrue Holiday also played solid for 44:44 minutes! He was a +/-14 for the nite.

The Spurs were one and done when they were not turning over the ball. It certainly helped that they were on the 7th of 8 road games (their annual rodeo tour). The Sixers have caught them at home in this position before. But who cares. That was an AWSOME game. Sixers 106- Spurs 94. Wonder why the Sixers tend to have these great Friday nite home games like Dallas and the Celtics earlier this season?

BTW, the Spurs, DeJuan Blair is a monster. You could see he would be this kind of player at Pitt last year. I can’t help but think that the Sixers need a space eater like him. He can get after it. Something we lost with Reggie Evans going to Toronto.

Sixers make deal with Bucks | Philly | 02/18/2010 – Just short of the trade deadline, the Sixers confirm they are trading Royal Ivey and Primoz Brzec to the Bucks in exchange for rookie shooting guard Jodie Meeks and journeyman Francisco Elson.

You are sadly disappointed, if you were looking for some blockbuster deal from Ed Stefanski. I thought he was very clear about his intentions earlier this week … He was not dumping salaries for cap space and tanking games. He was looking for a like for like trade to improve THIS club. Not tear it down and build another. Give Ed credit for being true to his word. If he goes down it will be on his own terms. Not the whim of public opinion.

So very little should have been expected today. And very little happened. Elson is hurt and will probably never join the team. Brzec, his counterpart, has been basically a DNP all season. So that’s a wash. Ivey was a fan favorite, their best on the ball defender, and had developed a 3 point (something he was not noted for). This will be his 2nd dance with the Bucks. His counterpart, the rookie Meeks, looks to have potential. They are about the same size, but Meeks is younger. So I guess you can say it’s a plus for the Sixers … kinda .. sorta … maybe.

I’m okay with it all. Let’s just get on with this death march to the end of the season. There’s no way Eddie Jordon gets this team to the playoffs. Let’s just get out of dodge with our butts intact. Like the Sixers GM, I am hoping this season was a special edition of the Twilight Zone and the hour will be over soon.

The Sixers beat Timberwolves for fifth straight win. Yes, a 5 game win streak. The 76ers finally broke thru the 3 win ceiling (Friday, 101-94 over NOH) that has plagued them all season and went on to win their 4th (Sat. 102-95 over Rockets) and now their 5th straight game over the T-wolves.

A blowout over the Timberwolves (119-97) … Priceless after that total collapse the Sixers had against them on MLK day. I’m a little disappointed that I opted out of the game last nite. I can’t remember the last time I saw a blow-out in person.

I know what some are saying. Why try to win. Everyone knows I hate tanking games. Even while I’ll admit that lottery luck is the swiftest path to contention. I just don’t believe the lottery is lucky every year. If that were true the Clippers would have a few rings by now.

No I’m not sold on John Wall. Does he have the make up of a star NBA player? Yes! Will he be a superstar top 5 draft pick on par with LeBron, Duncan, Robinson, Jordon, Magic? I’m gonna go out on a limb and say …. Nope!

Besides, have you seen how bad some the teams behind us are? The Nets have 4 wins … 4! They’re in sight of the worst record EVER (9 wins). Then there’s Washington (17), Indiana & Detroit (18), and New York (19). That’s just the eastern conference. There are 4 more teams in the west with worst records than Philly. You are kidding yourself if you like those odds.

Better to have the #1 draft pick for one of those teams. That’s how the Lakers got Magic.

Yes, at 20-31 the Sixers are 11 games under 500. But the eastern conference stinks. Forget the 5 teams behind us. The bottom 3 teams in the playoffs each has only 25 wins. That’s only 5 games. I’m just doing the math here.

Sixers bag nice win over the Bulls

The Sixers bag a nice win over the Bulls 106-103 in overtime. The Sixers’ defense looked really good in the 2nd half. Particularly at the end of the 4th and in over time. EB had another strong outing with 26 points. Igoudala had 25 points, 8 boards and 8 dimes. His body language was much better tonight. At this juncture in the season, he has to forget about all the negative energy about their record and trades and keep his nose to the grindstone and play hard.

The Sixers had a chance to win it in regulation, but Iggy missed the back end of two at the line and EB missed the put back.

You didn't mind them going into overtime if you were a fan at the game … free Big Macs for everyone when the Sixers score over 100.

In remembrance of one of the truly great Philadelphia sports personalities. Tom Brookshire, dead at 78. I never saw 'em play football for the Philadelphia Eagles, but I heard he was a great one. My first memory was the duo of Tom Brookshier and Pat Summerall doing CBS football broadcasts. Before there was John Madden with (take your pick), there was Pat Summerall and Madden, and before there was Summerall and Madden, Brookshire and Summerall was the gold standard for NFL broadcasting.

I remember how inviting he was as a radio show host in the mornin’ on the fledgling WIP sports radio station. It is easy to argue that Brooksie was the genesis of sports talk radio in Philly today.

Lakers gear on Sale at the Sixers Game?

So I was part of the sellout crowd tonight at the Wach center to see the annual Sixers vs Lakers game. Even if the Sixers don't win (and that was not likely) it's always a good show. Tonite was no different. AI and Kobe put on a show in the 3rd period. Iverson had his best game of the season and Kobe was the Black Mambia. But the Sixers found another way to lose. This time it was turnovers (20). I hear the game was followed by another round of ridiculous statements from coach Eddie Jordon. It doesn't bother me anymore.

I didn't mind the loads of Lakers fans at the game either. Hey they are the world champs. They are leading the western conference and as some genius on WIP proclaimed "That Kobe guys is pretty good".

No, what bothered me was to see Lakers gear ... Yes, Lakers gear proudly on display and for sale at the Wachovia Center. Pardon me but isn't that sacrilege! You don't sell the opposing teams gear. Even if your team stinks. Even if that team is the world champion.

How low can they go? How desperate has this organization become? Have they no pride?

Has the ranks of the faithful fallen off so much that they see salvation in fair weather and front runner fans? Perhaps they should just open a Dick's Sporting goods store.

I guess this will be the hot topic in sports today. David Stern suspends Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton for the remainder of the season for the stupid gun incident. Sentencing by the courts is still pending. Here is the official statement from the NBA.

All over a gambling debt. Again stupid. Some, link Mitch Lawrence at the NY Daily News think Stern did not go far enuff. I’m sure there will be some who will say it is too harsh for a stupid mistake.

After all it’s not like anyone was harmed … it’s not like he choked somebody .. right?

The one thing that will not be debated is that it was stupid … and criminal of course.

Sixers bow down to the Bucks

I guess I’ve just been de-programmed to expect this. The Sixers and Bucks have similar records. Which is to say … bad. So the game was a ragged affair. The sloppy play, poor substitutions, and 4th quarter swoon are all part of the script.

Unlike Monday’s game the Sixers returned to feeding Brand in the post. EB responded with a season high 26 points. But all I will remember his that he missed a bunny layup in the last seconds of the game that would have tied it.

My hope they could turn last Friday’s win over the Mavs into a winning streak or finish the week 3-1 was just a foolish dream. I’ll head down to the arena tomorrow to hear the raucous crowd cheer/boo Kobe.

All or Nothing: Errors Key in Sixers' Loss to Bucks

I love to read the Sunday paper. It’s a guilty pleasure that helps keep my perspective about the world. Kate Fagan’s writing for the Sixers beat has become a guilty pleasure and likewise helps keep my perspective on my world (the Sixers). Today’s insider story; Inside the Sixers: Taking stock of 76ers: Not pretty was sobering. I know there are others like myself that are amazed at her frankness. It is all to common for the media to become chummy with the team they cover on a daily basis (becoming less objective). It’s a wonder she still has a job.

While the article reaffirmed much of what I already knew, the revelation that others in team management (or close to it) wondered aloud that Eddie Jordon was not the right guy, before the season started, was an eye opener.

The Sixers had a nice win over the Pacers Saturday nite. Once again EB was the rock the Sixers swam to in the storm. I’m okay with that. Beating teams like the Pacers is what’s needed for them to reach the playoffs in the retched Eastern conference. That probably won’t get Eddie Jordon fired, but I just can’t stand losing. And I can’t see winning the John Wall sweepstakes. There are just too many bad teams out there.

So I will be rolling down to the Wac center Monday nite. Cheering for another win over the Pacers. No it’s not pretty, but what’s a die hard fan to do?

New Bench Powers Sixers over Mavs for the win

If there is anything good you could say about the grinding 82 game NBA schedule, it would be that after a disappointing loss like Wednesdays loss to Portland there is always a new game in a day or two. So there is little time to brood. You just have to get up for the next game.

Eddie Jordon started a new line-up tonite. Sittin’ Thad Young and Lou Williams for Elton Brand and Jrue Holliday. If you have been watching at all, YungsMuv21 has not been playing well lately and Brand has been one of the few steady performers. For Williams it was not so much about his performance but about overall team defense. Jordon stopped just short of saying it, but the combination of Williams & Iverson in the backcourt is just too frickin’ short. Teams were posting up Iverson to start the game and sending the Sixers chasing their tails to cover it up. And lets face it …. Eddie Jordon does not have the balls to sit Iverson. So Lou was the odd man out. Holliday played only 15 minutes, but he did set the defense tone the Sixers needed.

It is hard to tell how much this new look will work out because the bench outscored the starters tonite. Thad Young-is-smooth was electric. Scoring 18 point in the 1st half. He was spinning and hoopin’ and loopin’ and giving Dallas fits. The combination of Thad and Williams played extended minutes in the 2nd period. Which took a lot of pressure off the starters. The most exciting thing about this Sixers win was (1) They played good defense. Sure I agree that Dirk was off tonite, but the Sixers held the Mavs 19 points under their average. (2) The Sixers forged a 12 point lead going into the 4th period and held on to win the game. (3) the Sixers beat a very good team tonite (not just a team with a winning record).

So I feel a lot better than I did this mornin’, but I gotta keep it real. The true test is to keep it going. They play 4 games in the next 7 days. A 2 game Home and Home series with the Pacers (15-28), a road game versus the Bucks (17-24), and the Lakers Show next Friday. Seriously, I don’t think 3-1 is too much to ask for … seriously.

For his part, Samuel Dalembert has been remarkable. He continues to beat the drum for his struggling homeland. If you know anything about Sammy, you know his charity is not something new. I don’t know what this is .. Sanctimony or Sanity. My blog has been empty for over a month. It is not that I have not been watching my Sixers … or attending games …. or reading my fellow bloggers like Ricky, Liberty Ballers, and the the Depressed Fan. I still read Kate Fagan’s articles everyday on Philly.com …

I just can’t seem to get up for it like I used to. January is a rockin’ month for the 76ers over the last few years. We watch them gel as a team on the annual holiday left coast road trip. Then rip off several 5-6-7 game win streaks on the way to the all star break.

(sigh) Its sad to think that those were the good old days. Nowadays , there is no sizzle.

I watched Mondays matinee tape delayed on TiVo. No bigee. Sometimes life gets in the way and you can’t watch the game live. I started watching a couple of hours after tip-off. And I’m enjoying the game. I was at the game last Friday nite (a win over the Kings) and I was anxious to see them string a few wins together. Enter the Minnesota Timberwolves. A rarity in the NBA. They are a team with a worse record than the Sixers. The Perfect storm, right?

So I’m the digging the game. Its the 2nd period and my buddy calls me up. “Hey can you believe the Sixers blew a 20 point lead!”. I fell off my couch … WHAT! They lose this game? ”Yeah” he says “They just lost in overtime”. I was incensed. I turned off my TV and nearly threw my remote at the screen. I could not watch another second.

So on Wednesday, I somehow forgot that we were playing Portland. What’s wrong with me? I actually tune into the end of the game. 41 seconds left and the 76ers are down 4. There’s a timeout and Eddie J is dazzling everyone with his offensive brilliance. Exiting the timeout, Iggy puts up a lame 3 pointer that clanks off the rim. I knew it was over. Hell the Sixers knew it was over.

“Thank goodness I didn't have to watch the whole thing” I’m thinking to myself.What’s wrong with me? Why am I so jaded. I have seen worse in my 30 years as a 76ers fan.

Somebody help me make sense of all this!

Sixers waste an opportunity and lose to the Clippers

Wasted! That’s how I feel. The Sixers waste last nite’s win over Boston by losing to a sub 500 team tonite. And there’s simply no excuse for it. Yeah I know there was a snow storm outside, but everyone was there long before game time. The Clipper played last nite also. So the back to back thing was even.

But the Sixers come out soft. They allowed the Clipper to score 30 points in each of the first two quarters. That can’t happen. Maybe you don’t come out of the gate firing on all cylinders, but you don’t get torched for 60 by a sub-par team. It was about physicality. The Sixers did not man up on defense and they got out rebounded … again.

To their credit they did get it straighten out in the second half. And I thought Igoudala's shot at the buzzer was good and would get that monkey off his back. But it was not to be. I can’t recall a closer call. I did not see undisputable evidence to overturn the call on the floor. But hey I'm a homer. The Sixers went flat in overtime and drop the game 112-107. I thought the braves souls that ventured out in a blizzard deserved better.

The streak is Over

Yes, the streak is over. That's the Celtics 11 game winning streak. The Sixers marched in to Beatown and slayed the dragon. They nearly notched a win last time there. Losing in a 113-110 shootout. Shorthanded again the Sixers prevailed this time, 98-97.

This was an excellent game from start to finish. Sheed Wallace provided some fireworks. Getting kicked out of the game for the 1st time this year. Some things never change. Jrue Holiday had another solid game. I really like this kid. A real point guard.

Sixers found away to finish down the stretch this time. Iggy hit some big shots and Brand tipped in the game winner. In fact, Brand leads all Sixers with 23 points. He may not like it, but Brand and Mo Speights coming off the bench seems to be the key. They needed more scoring from the bench.

I’m pumped … bring on the Clippers!

Kings James and Cavs top the SIxers 108-101

Despite the loss I had a great time at the game. There was lotsa star power in the house to see Lebron. Just to name a few; Roy Halladay, Ryan Howard, Ray Emery, Riley Cote, Desean Jackson & Leonard Weaver.

The Sixers played well enuff to win, but of course they didn’t. James took over in crunch time. They just can’t get stops or buckets when they need them.

Mo Speights was back. He was a little rusty but scored well anyway. I count maybe 15 seconds on the floor before he got up a shot.

It doesn’t get any easier. We go to Boston on Friday.

Sixers win, Sixers win, Sixers win. Thank goodness that’s over. I was very confident they would. The Warriors are a small team, that does not rebound well, does not play defense, and on the last game of a 5 game cross country road trip. The stars were in alignment.

The game was a perfect setup for Thaddeus Young. He was unstoppable in the 1st half. He had that spin move of his going and I am certain that Radmanovic never figured out that Thad is left handed.

Jordon started Jrue Holiday over E.B., and the rookie looked good. You might attribute some of that to the opponent, but Monta Ellis is no joke. Holiday had him on lock down. His height and quickness at the guard position was a welcome change.

Jordan after then win said the change was mostly about the small line-up. But rotation has been a questions mark all season. How do you keep Holiday out of the line-up when Williams gets back. No way you can play Iverson and Williams at the same time. They are just too small. Yea, they give you offense, but they would be exploited defensively. Then it ripples through the line-up. You can’t sit Iggy. So you move ‘em to forward. Thaddeus’ play still warrants a start (particularly if he continues to rebound in the double digits). Sammy’s the 5. So Brand is out (backing up Sammy).

And Brand is not happy. Brand said: "When you look around at other teams, yeah. No disrespect, but Mikki Moore, he gets to start and I don't.". His minutes will wither again when Mo Speights gets back. Speights is ahead of schedule. Jordon has some decisions to make. Mo does not have to start, but he needs minutes. Who’s minutes? Brands minutes? Sammy’s minutes?

Losing Freakin' suxs! Duh ... The Sixers drop another game to the Pistons. This time at home. What’s a die hard fan to do with an 11 game losing streak and 5-17 record. Third worst record in the league.

So sure I'm pissed. We put up with bogus claims of how great a coach Eddie Jordon is (despite his record). We put up with the bogus claims about how they can win without a superstar or how many players are on the verge of stardom. For what? I have suffered some of the leans years after Charles Barkley left and I'll tell you what ...

... many of those teams had more heart. I'm not seeing the intensity needed to win in the NBA. Sure you can play, but you gotta do more than that to win in the NBA. I've seen more effort from Lawrence Frank's winless Nets and he has been dismissed.

Everybody's mesmerized about the return of Iverson. Who's losing sleep over the whole thing going into the crapper? I don't see anyone willing to do the dirty work needed to get that rebound ... to get that 4th quarter stop.

Somebody should be angry or at least embarrassed. The Sixers have not lost 11 straight for almost 15 years.

The loss of Mo Speights was bigger than anyone thought. He seemed to be the only one willing to mix it up.

I just returned from the southern hemisphere and I have not seen much about my Sixers. Things are pretty bleak based on the box scores I’ve been seeing .

What’s that? Allen Iverson has re-signed with the team and makes his debut Monday against the team he was traded to (Nuggets)?

Didn’t all that happen this summer? I thought I saw that on twitter or somethin’.

Okay … that may be a bit of a stretch. If you live within 50 miles of the city you have been bombarded with the media storm that Ai’s return has become.

The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive with the fans and the media. Gone are the harsh words the ushered Iverson out of the door. Everybody’s excited. But Allen … you’ve gotta cut out the crying thing. Save the crocodile tears for when you actually accomplish something.

The NBA is getting into the act. The new look old school Sixers #3 Iverson jersey went on sale the day he signed. There is no doubt that many fans are relived that their old no. 3 Sixers jersey is back in style. Doubly relieved they never had to make the choice. You know what I mean … If you had to don the number of a current Sixer, who’s would it be … Iguodala? Williams? Brand? What about YoungMoov21? The choice that forces you to cast your support for a player who … is a good player, but …. not a superstar.

And regardless of your views about AI. He is a superstar (albeit an aging one) and you have to understand what a star driven league this is. How difficult to it is to win … let alone improve for teams without a superstar.

As proof positive AI represents the best chance for the Sixers to salvage this season. You have to concede that point. Without a superstar this season is toast.

Sure you could tank games for a lottery pick. But that is not a sure thing. There is no one in next years draft that is going to set the world on fire. Trust me. You would have heard about it by now. But There are plenty of bottom feeders this year. Shedding salaries for the Lebron James sweepstakes. Good luck with that one.

With a superstar you are almost assured a playoff spot. And if the chips fall right, you could make some noise. Catch lightning bottle.

That’s what you have gotta hope for. Catching lightning in a bottle … You gotta have a little luck.

That’s were GM, Stefanski is right now. Dam the 4 year plan. The ship was sinking. With no way to improve the attendance numbers with this undermanned crew. The injury to Williams sealed it. Dam the bridges burned behind Iverson. Welcome back little big man.

Now go out there and catch lighting in a bottle.

Brand New Day

"I'm going to find something good to make him mad Friday" quipped Lou Williams. The Sixers outlasted the B’Cats 86-84 at home last nite.

So Elton Brand shows signs of life just a day after I was ready to give ‘em up for dead. His performance last nite was undeniable his best as a Sixer. 42 Minutes, 19 Points, 11 boards (7 Offensive), 3 steals and 6 blocks. I found the 6 blocks to be most impressive. He was getting physical. Something he isn’t known for … Something this team has sorely lacked thus far. So maybe Brand won’t be such a disappointment. Let’s give it 10 more games.

But it is still a concern that it took the final seconds to beat a woeful team like Charlotte. The Bobcat scored 25 points off of 19 turnovers. There was something wrong with the official scorer which only tallied 12 TOs for the Sixers. They gave back the ball on back to back possessions several times. Which kept the Bobcats in the game despite their lack of team play and the ball hog that is the newly acquired Stephen Jackson.

When they weren’t turning the ball over they were bricking shots or whining to the refs. Carney was a bright spot. I give Jordon some credit for choosing him to be 1st off the bench in the absence of Speights. Carney went 2-4 from the 3 point line for 10 points and the +15 +/- was the best for any player that clocked in.

I supposed it would be too much to ask for a win Friday over the Grizzles. Another bottom feeder. We seem to play down to their level. (sigh) No AI for the Grizzles anymore. I may not go down tomorrow.

Seriously … I dunno what to think.

"See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil". "If we do not hear, see, or speak of how bad the Sixers are, then they can’t be bad.” Right?

But I was at the Utah debacle last Friday nite. It was disgusting. It was so bad they had fans pining for Toney Dileo’s return.

Say what you will about last years team … no superstar, can’t shoot, can’t defend .. what have you. That team brought it every nite. They were often overmatched but rarely blown out (the same could be said for Mo Cheeks squad). But this years model has been blown-out 3 times in the first 2 weeks.

UGH!

That’s all I could say after the loss. “I dunno what to think” when reminded about the Bulls game Saturday nite. Against my better judgment … I watched game. They didn’t get blown-out, but they didn’t win either.

UGH!

And we lose Mo Speights to boot. As much as the Sixers did not want to talk about it. It can no longer be ignored. The EB experiment aint working. And with Speights out for 6 weeks there are no easy alternatives. Somethin' has gotta give.

So there are rumors about a Dalembert trade in the works. Nothing new about that. But who thought they would start out like this.

Even without Mo Speights the line-up will change tomorrow nite. The word on the street is that the Sixers will play more small ball.

The Sixers were in a dog fight against the winless New Jersey Nets tonite. The Nets nearly beat the Celtics in their last tilt. So the fact they dressed on 8 players (only 7 played) was of little consequence. The Sixers had their hands full against a desperate team.

The game came down to the Sixers holding a 1 point lead in the final seconds. The Sixers needed a stop. After the time-out the Nets went to stand-out center Brook Lopez. Sammy comes up with a HUGE block that essentially won the game. The beauty of his talent was on full display.

Also on display was Young smooth 21. Yes last year’s Thaddeus Young had 20 pts, 5 rebounds, & 3 assists. Young paced the Sixers with 12 points in the 1st period. It was a beautiful thing to see.

Willie Green hit two clutch buckets in the fourth period. Green, who was referred to as “the fungus” that would not go away in a blog post I read today, hit his first bucket of the game (a 3 pointer) with the Sixers trailing by one. It is plays like that, that keeps him on the floor. The coaches seem to like ‘em. So he’s going to be in the mixed. Like it or not.

At the end of the day … any road win is a good one and the 76ers are 4-4.

Suns run past the 76ers

If you are fan of basketball you have to appreciate the artistry that is Steve Nash. I could not help but admire some of the moves he made last nite as he carved the 76ers up for 20 assists and 21 points. It was like he NEVER made a bad decision out there.

So it’s hard to frown on the 100’s of Nash fans at the Wachovia center last nite. But I have to say the girl with the life size cut out of Nash on her lap has to be the fringe.

For my Sixers, it was a different day but the same tune. They played well enough to win. The bench played really well in this one. Particularly the rookie Holiday who had meaningful minutes (15 minutes, 8 points, 2-3 3PT’s, 2 steals). And Igoudala played well (24 & 9, points and rebounds). He is stepping it up and forcing the action instead of waiting for the games to come to him.

To look at the box score you might say the Sixers played a good game, but the Suns are just that much better. They scored 115 points on 53% shooting (over 60% in the 1st half). So what’s the problem? What’s has been the problem? What will teams continue to do until the Sixers correct it?

The Sixers can’t defend the 3!

The Sun’s J.Rich was 6-6 from the 3 point line before missing his last 2. As a team the Suns finished 50% (15-30) from 3 point range. With the game in the balance the Suns executed consecutive 3 points plays to retake control of the game.

This as to stop. The Sixers have to find a way to fix this. It’s maddening.

I could just not cipher how they did it … Lose to a smaller team by getting out rebounded on your defensive boards. They surrendered 21 offensive boards to the pistons (Sixers had 14), and a total of 51 rebounds (Sixers had 39). Don’t give me that crap about how great Ben Wallace played (16 boards). Rebounding is about effort and we did not see it on Sunday.

The Sixers coughed up 16 turn-overs to make matters worse. Every starter had at least 2 TOs.

The Sixers bench is doing better, but the starting five needs some work.

So the question has to be asked; “When do you put Speight's in the starting line-up?

“I have never seen this place so empty” says the guy next to me. And he has been a season ticket holder for 9 years. I was inclined to agree. “It’s the Phillies hangover effect” I said. Looking for some way to dismiss the sparse attendance on a Friday nite as an anomaly. Statistically the attendance was 10,054.

But the crowd that was there gave it everything they had. No way the Sixers could lose to the injury riddled New Jersey Nets. The last team in the NBA without a win.

Okay, it could have looked a little sharper. You’d like to see them pummel a team like this. But at least they won. Look at the scoring by periods; 18, 32, 18, 29. Eddie Jordon is still playing with the rotation. There was not the same drop off this time when he went to the bench in the second period, but its gotta be tough on the players to establish any rhythm without consistent minutes. If you know you only got 4 minutes at the start of the 2nd period, then you bust your butt for four minute. But then to sit the next game. It has to difficult for a bench player.

Take Rod Carney for example, after 9 minutes against Boston (0-2, 1 point) and 6 in the Knicks game (0-2, 0 points) How can you not score against the Knicks. On Friday Carney gets 4 minutes … at the start of the 4 period? To his credit he hit his first 3 and went 1-2.

Sadly it may take awhile. The starters probably need to play better before Jordon settles on a rotation. I will try to remain calm. It’s too early to panic. Maybe we can get it rolling against the Pistons tomorrow.

I’m not a rich guy by any stretch of the imagination. So when I roll down to the Wac center. I want to get my moneys' worth. I’m not saying I was looking for the Sixers to blow out the Celtics …. I wasn’t even expecting a win against the reigning division champs.

I just wanted my team to show up.

But it’s not like anyone showed up. The reported attendance was 11,251 (objects in your mirror are smaller than they appear). But the arena had a hollow feel and the play in the first quarter reflected it. Both teams started off like they had forgotten how to shoot. There was no energy in the building. Even the 17-19 first quarter was hollow. They had taken twice as many shots as Boston to get there.

And then the second quarter started. Coach Jordon put in the bench. And the the wheels fell off.

So that’s why I thought the game kinda sucked. It wasn’t incredible shooting from the C’s. It wasn't suffocating defense. The Sixers just never showed up.

And I spied more Celtics fans the later the game got. It was like they had their pathetic green jerseys hidden and became more brazen as the C’s pulled away. Boasting about how great they are and chanting for Brian Scalabrine to enter the game. Frickin’ Celtics fans.

Trick or Treat

The Knicks game last nite on Hallows eve was scary. The table was setup nicely for the 76ers. It was the Knicks. The shot a minute, no defense playing dredge of the division. The Knicks lost a double overtime the nite before in Charlotte.

Treat: The Sixers came out smoking. The offense was scary good. EB was taking advantage of the Knicks on the lower block. Sammy was blocking shots. After a 10-10 start. The Sixers when on a run to take control of the game. They scored 40 points in the 1st period … FOURTY!

Trick: But some of that dropped of in the 2nd period when Jordon when to the bench. I know …. don’t remind me, it’s too early to worry about the bench.

Treat: The Sixers manage to win the period 30-26. So I’m in awe of a 70 point half. I’m thinkin’ they’re gonna score 120 or more at this pace. They give back 4 points in the 3rd period 26-30. But they’re up, 96-81.

Trick: Then the Knicks go crazy. Apparently they had done the same the nite before. Al Harrington just went off. And the kid Gallinari was hittin’ CRAZY 3’s. They tally 41 in the fourth to force overtime. “This can’t be happening” I’m thinking.

Treat: But then the Sixers wake up in overtime. I’m sure the Knicks’ tank was running on empty by then. They out score the Knicks 19-5. Game-over-man.

I was happy to see the Sixers hold off Bucks in the home opener last nite. The shaky start against the Magic had my stomach turning. I know you can’t put too much stock into any one game. Even if its the 1st game of the season. But it was the way they lost. It was F-ugly.

I know the media has been talking a lot about the new Princeton offense that Edie Jordon brings to the table. But for his part, Jordon did a lot of talking about defense. So when the defense looked Sooo Baaad on Wednesday nite ... well it was really uncomfortable.

Not taking anything away from the reigning conference champs, but the broadcasters were talking like Jason "White Chocolate" Williams was the second coming on MJ. I

t was bad defense. Pure and simply. So I feel a lot better after the win over the Bucks. It was nice to win a home opener. We haven't done that for a couple of years. Still there's a drop-off when Jordon goes to the bench. He's still working on how's gonna get minutes.

We have to give ‘ema dozen games to establish a routine. I’m trying to stay calm.

There’s alot more going on the the background than you might think when you make a uniform change. The blogsphere heard about the change last season. Then the NBA got ahead of the Sixers formal announcement when they did the annual photo shoot for rookies. Can’t Put Jru Holiday in last years uniform. So the picks were taken in the new Red, White, and Blue.

We are fortunate the guys at 2K sports had enough time to update the Sixers new look on NBA 2K10. Looks like they got the new floor in there too.

Welcome back Rod Carney

With training camp fast approaching the 76ers resign Rodney Carney. This should come as a surprise to nobody. The Sixers have said as much for sometime now. And if you’re like me you don’t have a problem with it. But it doesn’t make you jump with glee either.

Rod is what he is. He fits the up tempo Sixers style but needed to work on the three point shot. He increased his 3 point field goal percentage a bit last year with the T’wolves (.350 up from .317 his last year with the Sixers). If he continues to improve he will get more playing time.

Just like when he left.

Hmm … looks like some folks are gonna get some more mileage out of that Rodney Carney jersey they bought a couple of years back.

Iverson heading to Memphis

Allen Iverson (alleniverson) on Twitter says he is heading to Memphis. David Aldridge is reporting it on NBA.com. But this seems to be the new thing. Breaking News on Twitter. ESPN has already added it to their “Breaking news” ticker crawl.

“God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career. I met with Mr. Heinsley, Chris Wallace and my next head coach Lionel Hollins” Says AI.

So the answer will be in town February 11th. Not a bad scenario for Iverson. It will be the 1st full year for Head coach Lionel Hollins and the Grizzles are rebuilding their team persona. They have a lot of young talent; Mike Conley, Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol, and O.J. Mayo. And they will now be anchored by some veterans with the likes of AI and Zach Randolph.

Contemplating Samuel

Contemplating Samuel Dalembert this coming season. The ball stalking enigma that is the 76ers starting center. Some people love ‘em … some people hate ‘em. Me? I love ‘em when I’m not hating ‘em.

Trade ‘em has been a frequent refrain though out his career here in Philly. Indeed Sammy has insisted on it (at times) and the Sixers have tried (at times), but the task has been easier said than done.

His contract is the root of this frustration. For the fans; “he’s not worth the money” and for the GM “We can’t trade ‘em because of the money”. "Rockets pass on Dalembert"” philly.com 7/7/09, a $3.8 million dollar trade kicker on top of a nearly $12 million dollar a year contract makes it difficult. BTW we can’t thank you enough for that contract Billy King.

To be fair the modern definition of a true center has evolved over the years. Phil Barnett’s article in TalkHoops.net “The De-Evolution of the Center” is a few years old but still very relevant. “Today’s center position has been re-defined by up-tempo offenses and small ball”. By that definition, Sammy’s skills should be coveted.

But everybody wants to be the ‘golden child’, not the down and dirty muddler. Sammy needs to understand that it takes both types to make a team truly successful. That it is not the accolades that give you self-worth. It’s truly about … yourself … that gives you self worth. Forget about the contract for a moment! If he could just play defense, block shots, and rebound (consistently). Samuel Dalembert would be a valuable asset to ANY team.

So what’s it gonna be Samuel. If you really want out of Philly you can give up the 15% trade clause. If you really want to stay you can grow a thicker skin and just get down to ballin’. You are not Kevin Garnett … You are not Shaquille O’Neal … you are not some phenomenal hybrid of the two. You have two years left on your current “toxic” contract … it’s time to be down.

Jrue Holiday – give‘m some luv y’all

Givin some luv to Sixers #1 draft pick this year Jrue Holiday.

One on the many questions marks I’ve heard this year about the Sixers chances this season has been concerning the loss of Andre Miller. ‘Dre was a fan favorite who showed Philly fans what is was like to have a REAL point guard instead of some guy who hogs the ball all the time.

Most are not convinced that Sweet Lou can handle the new responsibility. By now we know that Lou Williams is gonna be Lou Williams. That’s not to say he won’t be affective. It’s just not gonna be the straight up point guard stuff we have been privileged to witness the last few years.

Enter Jrue Holiday … who, in my humble opinion, is a true point guard (check-out the video). Not playing the 1-guard at UCLA did not help his standing as an elite player. But it was fortuitous for the 76ers. They are preachin’ patient with Holiday. Setting a low bar for his 1st season. But you gotta wonder … the Sixers have been quit astute in the draft recently. Picking players like Jason Smith, Thad “Young is smooth”, and Mo Speights who contributed in their first season’s as professionals. Jrue Holiday just might be the right player in the right place at the right time.

Can Jason Kapono bring the 3 back to Philly?

It remains to be seen whether the Sixers off season acquisition, Jason Kapono, can bring the 3 back to Sixers basketball.

Kapono makes it look easy here in this NBA footage practicing for the NBA shootout. But sports is all about the NOW. Not the past. He is coming of a poor season in Toronto. Averaging only 8 points per game. He fell short of expectations and registered 46 DNP coach’s decision last year. But the Raptors, who were the darlings of the NBA only a few years ago, had problems across the board. So it’s hard to judge Kapono.

Was it a steal to grab the NBA’s best 3 point shooter or was his 06-07 season with the Heat the peak of his career?

It was a casual conversation I was part of with some Sixers fans at the Wac center earlier this week. “What if they brought Allen back? Nope … not gonna happen … You know that would get people excited. Say what you will about ‘em. Iverson puts fannies in the seats. You know there are rumors on the internet that they are talking!”

And why not? This is the city of brotherly love , right? With the Eagles Michael Vick signing it appears that we have become the city of redemption. That final destination for kindred spirits to overcome past transgressions and rekindle past glory.

Then there are the tweets on AI’s twitter page yesterday ..

“Happy for Mike (Vick)! Thanks be to God and the Philadelphia Eagles! Great Fans! Great place to resurrect a great career! Do Great Things”
“I can't help imagining, Vick, McNabb, Rollins and Iverson all playing in the City of Brotherly Love........Picture That!”

Is this crazy talk? Wishful thinkin’? Perhaps … The Sixers have 12 signed guys on the roster. There is only room for 2 more. After the signing of Royal Ivey, Stefanski stated that they are not targeting anyone else at this point. They will probably fill the last 2 spots during training camp.

But there is always a chance if the right veteran comes available at the right price … right?

I can hear the comments already. Much like the Vick signing, some will say … No way … that shipped has sailed … this is terrible. The teams doesn’t need the drama. Others will say … wow this is great! This makes us a better team. Everybody deserves a second chance!

Still others will say … Huh?

I dunno that I would be terribly opposed to it under the right circumstances. I just wanna see some entertaining basketball. There are too many unknowns right now to get people excited. One thing is certain however … it would get people talking about Sixers basketball.

Is EB finally ready to play ball?

Is Elton Brand's return enough to push the Sixers to the top of the East? Honestly that was the caption for this image on NBA.com. Who comes up with this dribble. I know it’s had to fill space in the off-season, but Pleez!

Elton Brand still has to be a question mark in anyone’s mind. He was a question mark coming into last season and the best grade you can give ‘em for last season is an incomplete. So KG is hardly losing any sleep over EB.

The homer that I am is still hoping for the best for the 30 year old player this coming season. The offense will be new to everyone this year. So everyone will need to “fit in” to Eddie J’s system this year. Come to think of it … the Sixers are not just getting a “new” offense this year. They may just finally “have” an offense.

So EB is optimistic, but is he really ready to play ball?

In a Sixers.com interview Brand was asked; What’s been your favorite part of Philly so far, you got a favorite cheesesteak place or anything? The answer was the patented “passionate fans” reply that seems to work for any sport. I heard it from new Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee recently.

But he doesn’t have a fav cheesesteak shack yet? Whazzup up wit dat EB?

In case you were still wondering, it was made official yesterday. Andre Miller is not longer in the Sixers fold. Yesterday, he signed a 3 year 21 million dollar deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. Reportedly, 14 million is guaranteed.

Go ahead Andre. It sounds like a good deal for ya. Portland has some amazing talent, but was sorely lacking in point guard experience. No disrespect to Jeff Blake … the former University of Maryland graduate has down well with the limited skills he has, but he lacks the veteran savvy that Miller has.

I have a great appreciation for Andre after watching him play here. Like many I mistook his quiet demeanor for a lack of intensity. But I learned to appreciate the adroit passing skills, the high basketball IQ, the heart that he possesses. He has put on some spectacular shows in a Sixers uniform.

I will miss him, but I’m happy he is gone. Because of his unbelievable streak of consecutive games played ( 500+ games) there is little time for other guards to play the point. And his pride and will to win were so large that he would force things. Try to take over games when the Sixers needed it.

When they needed it most … is was Miller time. But no one else on this team would step up. Now someone has to step up to fill Miller’s shoes. The young bucks have seen him do it. Now it’s their turn. I don’t know who it will be, but someone’s got to.

Good luck Andre. We will wait and if it works out for you and Portland. Because Portland got handled in the playoffs by the underdog Rockets … No less than a 1st round playoff series win will signal success …. Something that Andre Miller has never done.

Fast Eddie swaps Reggie Evans for Jason Kapono

Ed Stefanski is trying to make good on his promise to address the team’s weaknesses. My biggest complaint is the lack of outside shooters. The name Jason Kapono doesn’t jump right out at you and there may be a number of things he can’t do, but …. we know the guy can shoot.

Too bad the price for a shooter is a fan favorite like Reggie Evans. I loved me some Reggie, but let’s face it … what you see is what you get. Reggie has done more with no talent than any player I have every seen. And did we mention that Kapono is 6’ 8” and he can shoot?

Reggie would be caught up in a numbers game next year anyhow. With the return of injured Elton Brand (don’t got there. You know he’s gotta play) and Jason Smith, not to mention upstart Maresse Speights there would be no minutes for Reggie.

I’m not saying Jason Kapono is a lock to solve the Sixers shooting woes. There is still the questions of his fitting in, teams chemistry, etc. But it’s a valid attempt to do so.

ROFL … we were going back and forth on facebook about the specs Andre Igoudala was wearing the other day at the Sixers press conference for Eddie Jordon. Sprinkled in among the rants about how poor a choice Eddie Jordon was were comments about the specs. Some hated it … some loved it. I’m partial to the nutty professor look. Erkel was a good one, but I thought Blankman was they best.

In addition to the physical resemblance, Blankman fits in other ways. You know the miss understood crime fighter. Alternately praised and despised by the public.

You have to give Ed Stefanski credit. He does not hide from the fans. He knows there are some fans that will never be satisfied with the answers he gives, but he still tries to answer them anyhow. Some people just want to vent and some just have a problem with the state of NBA basketball (not just the Sixers). But you would think he might be weary of the same questions; Trade Sam, Iggy’s not worth the money, Iggy can’t shoot, when are you gonna get a shooter (yeah that one’s me). But I believe he cares about the fans.

Whether he can bring home a championship is a different story. But I genuinely like the guy.

I am having a problem with this two Eds thing. You can’t just say “Ed” anymore. It’s Ed for Ed Stefanski and “Eddie” for Eddie Jordon. Honestly guys … how old were you when you told people to stop callin’ you “Eddie” …. 12? 13?

I’m underwhelmed.

I’m a little ticked off.

I’m glad the “search” is over.

I have stayed mum on the subject of a Sixers new head coach. While I agree it’s an important choice. Everyone agrees that player personnel is the elephant in the room. The “search” was a farce. Part of Ed’s ploy to justify hiring an old buddy of his. Somebody he’s comfortable with. A Pinocchio to his Geppetto.

It’s on the record that Avery Johnson was my man. But seems that Johnson smelled something rotten about the search early. He wanted to be brought in as “the guy”, not be part of an exhaustive search. What is that? Some kind of reality TV show or Ed McMahon's star search? But I gotta be honest. Johnson wasn’t a lock to improve the Sixers’ fortunes. He just would have been a better choice for ticket sales.

So the “search” is over. Let’s start talking about the players again. When are you gonna find somebody that can shoot the rock, Eddie?

Tony DiLeo is out as Sixers coach

I saw this last nite on TV sports. Tony D has declined consideration for the Sixers head coaching job. So Tony’s Out!

This is not a surprise to me. Tony is a great basketball guy, a local guy, you know how Philly says it … he’s one of us. But he does not have the temperament or drive for the NBA coaching grind. He’s more suited to be GM than head coach. I’m glad to see he will return to his prior position. He has been a great asset and we will need him to keep the draft in focus while the GM Stefanski cranks up the coaching carousel.

The front runners for Sixers new head coach; former Sixers star Doug Collins, former Wizards head coach Eddie Jordon, Former Dallas Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson, and former Houston head coach Jeff Van Gundy.

Collins has the Sixers family thing going and Eddie Jordon is reportedly close with GM Ed Stefanski. But my choice would be Avery Johnson. I have been eying Johnson since he we let go for little reason this year. He’s a fiery guy that knows basketball and will get in your grill when needed.

Come on Eddie! Let’s make quick work of this decision. You got a lot of player personnel work to do.

You’ve just been thumped out of the Playoffs … what’s next?

You’re a professional basketball team. You’ve just been thumped out of the Playoffs … what’s next … Disney World?

It’s taken me a while to consider posting another journal entry after attending the spanking that was the Sixers last game of the season (Actually is was a tweet from Andy’s blog Looking Ahead For The 76ers that nudged me). As a long suffering fan and loyalist I was totally embarrassed! :( It is an understatement to say they did not meet the great expectations that were laid upon them. It was more like … these guys really stink.

But all but one team loses their last game. What’s next … let the figure pointing begin. I thought some of the silliness after the season (negative comments about the coach from Theo, Theo & Miller skipping the last team meeting, etc.) is an indicator that the locker room was full of questions marks. Sixerville was not the Whoville of the previous two seasons.

So the head coach is the first place to point the finger. Tony DiLeo’s status is a question mark. I don’t want to lay it all at his feet, but I don’t think he should be head coach next year. I have to give him props for what he did. He was placed in a terrible position. He did an admirable job. Heck he did a great job considering where they where heading. But I think a head coach with more credentials is needed to get them past the .500 level. Bobbing around the .500 level for another season is not tenable.

DiLeo should stay with the team. I credit him more than anyone for the talent the Sixers have been able to find in the draft. But the GM needs to get another head coach soon. So he can get “his” guys in here for next season and that starts with the draft.

But honestly I can’t dwell on the Sixers too much. It’s still painful when I do that. So my doctor says “Don’t do That”. The way they finished did not help their fans. It is those performances that everyone seems to remember. Not the comeback against the Rockets or the Lakers road win on the games’ last shot. It was the total lack of effort in Game 6.

… So what’s next?

Great Expectations

So both Dwight Howard and Courtney Lee are out for this evenings game. Both ‘cause of Dwight Howard elbows. I really don’t want to discuss whether the suspension was warranted or not. This can be a cursing or a blessing.

Many might say it’s all good right? Two Magic starters and leading scorers for the series are out for game 6. It's a home game! The Sixers have it in the bag.

But I look at it as a curse. There is no pressure on the Magic. They are under manned. They can just let it all hang out. On the other hand … there are great expectations for the Sixers. They are the home team. They are expected to beat the short handed Magic. They are supposed to advance further in the playoffs than last year.

I’m just having flashbacks to the end of the season. When the Sixers were supposed to be in the running for the 4th seed, but they fell flat with a long losing streak. Then I had visions of the last game of the season. When the Sixers were expected to beat the Cleveland scrubs and struggled until the 4th period. They had to win that one in overtime.

It’s sad to say but only a thrashing by the Sixers will satisfy their critics. But I’ll just settle for a win … any win.

Well that was ugly

They Sixers fall to the Magic in Game 5, 91-78. A game in which they lost all 4 quarters. A game that was pretty ugly in a number of respects.

Least of all was the wicked elbows Howard was dishing out. I’m not sure what to say about the elbow he threw at Sammy in the 1st quarter, but the one he clocked his own teammate (Courtney Lee) with was brutal. Howard knocked him out and had no idea what he had done.

Scary talent is one thing. Scary like somebody could get hurt is another. The loss of Lee could really cost the Magic. It was clear that JJ Redic and Michael Petrus where out of their element as backups.

But Howard was the difference last nite. It was about him on defense. He made the Sixers timid. May the elbows where not a mistake.

Anyway you might count the Sixers out in game 6. But the attrition the Magic has suffered may change the outcome. The Sixers need to get back on that horse and find another win in this series.

That one got away from us

I’m not buying into to the storyline that the Sixers have over achieved or the Magic have stumbled. That was a hell of a game yesterday. This is a hell of a series.

Even that spastic 2nd period where neither team could score was something to see. Both teams where knocking the snot out of each other and the refs were letting them play. I liked our chances when the half ended with a 36-36 tie. The Sixers were out shooting the Magic from the 3 point line and banging the boards like crazy. When you shoot as poorly as the Sixers often do you gotta find extra possessions and they did … on the boards and off turnovers.

You had to expect a big push from Orlando in the 3rd and boy did they come out smokin’. But had they (the Sixers) made a few bunnies it would not have been so bad.

I was really proud of the crowd. There was a lot of energy in the house. The rally towels were waving … the chants for “defense” and “Lets Go” when it was obvious the Sixers needed a play. We thought we could win the game with sheer will.

Yup, this one got away. It was a Philly kind of ball game that we often find away to win. You can’t explain it, but you can’t deny it either.

I feel bad for Thaddeus. He was the target for the Magic’s game winning shot. It was obvious that his ankle was bothering him out there. I’m not sure when it happened, but he took quite a few tumbles in the second half. He was trotting back on defense with a limp. I was thinking we need to take ‘em out, but then he hit some very timely shots. So it’s hard to second guess the coaching staff.

All I know is this was different than last year’s Game 4. This series ain’t over yet. But surely this was a big fish that got away.
